Too Many Wishy Washy Pastors without Seminary

March 30th, 2010 Pastor Ben No comments

A recent survey finds that pastors still place a high value on seminary training.  Churches need to seek out and find those pastors who are called and affirmed by the Lord and those who have been proved out through the fires of Seminary.  Would you hire a nuclear physicist who holds no training in nuclear energy?  So when then do churches hire pastors without formal biblical training especially language studies in Hebrew and Greek?

LifeWay Research‘s study involving more than 1,000 Protestant pastors found that two-thirds have obtained at least a Master’s degree, and 71 percent report they regularly use things they learned in seminary. Also, of those pastors who went to seminary, 83 percent strongly agree the training and experience was worth the time and money.

The findings are at odds with a 2009 report from the Association of Theological Schools, which indicates that seminary enrollment was in a slump.

“The fact that pastors were overwhelmingly indicating in our survey that they’re using their seminary education and would do it all over again, we would say that seminary education is relevant today, but it may be a little more difficult financially,” comments Scott McConnell of LifeWay Research of the Southern Baptist Convention.

He adds that many seminaries are expanding their online courses to make it easier for both students and professors.  There is nothing which can replace the Seminary experience.  Pastors learning and growing from each other and building a prayer group as well as comradeship in today’s tumultuous times!
